Sustainable Tourism at Shampan – Travel with Purpose

Jaldapara is more than just a destination — it is a living, breathing ecosystem where rivers carve their way through emerald forests, elephants roam free, and birds sing the language of the wild. At Shampan, we believe that tourism here must protect what makes it so special.

Our Sustainability Pillars

We have built our eco-resort around five core principles that guide every decision we make.

1. Protecting Nature
Forest-friendly architecture and minimum use of plastic.
Native plant landscaping to support local biodiversity.
No pesticides or chemical fertilisers — our gardens are 100% organic.
Quiet zones to reduce noise pollution for wildlife.

2. Empowering Communities
Most of our staff are from the nearby area.
We source vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and spices from local farmers.
We partner with artisans for woodcraft, bamboo crafts, pottery, and textiles.
Guests can join tea village visits, cooking sessions, and cultural evenings to learn and interact respectfully.

3. Waste & Water Responsibility
Zero single-use plastic policy — we provide refillable glass bottles.
Minimal use of reusable plastic.
Rainwater harvesting systems for irrigation.
Waste segregation and composting of kitchen scraps.

4. Climate Conscious Living
We intend to use Solar energy in the coming days.
We encourage shared transfers and train travel to reduce emissions.
Tree planting drives to offset our carbon footprint.
We are working on a passive cooling design to avoid air conditioning use.

5. Guest Engagement
Guided birdwatching and wild walks led by trained local naturalists.
Eco workshops: organic gardening, bamboo craft, and traditional cooking.
Conservation volunteering opportunities for long-stay guests.
We are in the process of creating a nature library with books on the Dooars’ flora and fauna.

What We’re Doing in the Dooars
Our sustainability work is deeply rooted in the Dooars itself:
Local Education Support – We fund school supplies for the children of forest villagers.
Riverbank Clean-ups – Annual waste removal drives along the Murti and Jaldhaka rivers with community volunteers.
Bird Habitat Restoration – Planting native fruiting trees to attract barbets, bulbuls and other native birds.

How You Can Join Us
Your stay at Shampan automatically supports these initiatives, but you can do even more:

Avoid using loud music outdoors — let the jungle’s soundscape be your entertainment.
Choose our locally guided experiences instead of mass tours.
Plant a tree during your visit and track its growth with us.

Our Future Goals 100% Renewable Energy – By 2027, all power to come from solar energy.
Water Use Reduction – less water per guest night.
Practices aligned with Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) standards.
Collaborations with local forest departments and wildlife NGOs.
